WHY DO I NEED A SPILL

RESPONSE KITS?

Emergency response kits need to be looked at in the same light as a fire extinguisher or a first aid kit. You hope you’ll never need to use it . . . . Thank goodness it’s available should it be needed.

Another benefit of strategically located spill kits is that insurance inspectors love them! In many instances, this can have a effect on your insurance premiums.

 CASE HISTORY #1

Dayton, Ohio “state of the art” paint plant.  Second shift certified forklift driver (electric lift) turns corner too fast and looses one five-gallon metal can of a flammable liquid. The forklift driver stopped and ran to the nearest spill alarm station to report the spill (50 yards away). When he returned he tried to move the forklift out of the way and sparks on the lift contacts ignited the flammable vapors. The liquid had spread out under rows of aerosol cans and immediately turned the plant into an inferno.  Dollar loss was estimated at $49 million dollars! If this forklift driver had access to a $45.00 spill kit on his forklift, he could have contained the liquid and perhaps saved his job along with the $49 million dollar paint facility.

ACCIDENT COST: $49 + MILLION DOLLARS

CASE HISTORY #2

Service and delivery trucks have potential spill liabilities. A surprise to most is the liabilities involved with the service truck itself  (gasoline, motor oil, transmission oil, anti-freeze & battery acid).  Here is a rather unpleasant story that could have easily been avoided:

A Midwestern fleet leasing company dispatched a service pickup truck to assist a disabled vehicle experiencing mechanical difficulties. While in route to assist the disabled vehicle, the service truck was involved in a minor traffic accident. Roughly 10 gallons of gasoline was spilled onto the roadway. The responding fire department immediately hosed the fuel onto the grass next to the road. As a fuel spill was involved EPA was notified. EPA demanded that the trucking company clean up the contaminated ground.

The upset trucking company attempted to put liability on the fire department that hosed the fuel onto the ground. EPA was quick to point out that the trucking company was the responsible party since the source of the spill was their service vehicle.

The trucking company hired a spill response contractor who required a $10,000.00 retainer to start the clean up. After approval by the state & EPA officials, the clean up was completed at a total cost of $16,000.00. ! If the driver had access to a $45.00 spill kit on his truck, he could have contained the liquid and perhaps saved a $16.000.00 loss
